A New System; or, an Analysis of Antient Mythology. Volume 1 (of 6)
by Bryant, Jacob
Lion's Mark Library edition.
The ambition to unlock the secrets of the ancient world has always been a compelling one, and Jacob Bryant’s *A New System; or, an Analysis of Antient Mythology* represents a particularly earnest, if sprawling, attempt at just that. Published in 1807, this six-volume work offers a fascinating window into the intellectual currents of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries—a period when classical scholarship was undergoing a significant re-evaluation and the search for ‘original purity’ in tradition was a defining preoccupation. Readers today may find Bryant’s methods idiosyncratic, even quaint, but the sheer scope of his endeavor and the earnestness of his quest remain curiously engaging.
About the author: Jacob Bryant (1715–1804) was a scholar of considerable reputation in his own time, celebrated for his wide-ranging erudition and his ambitious attempts to reconstruct the history of ancient civilizations. Born in Kent, he received a classical education at Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge, experiences that shaped his lifelong fascination with the ancient world. While his career included roles as a tutor and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Bryant is best remembered for his prolific writings on mythology, history, and linguistics.
