History
A short history of Pittsburgh : 1758-1908
by Church, Samuel Harden
Lion's Mark Library edition.
The story of a city is rarely simple, often a tangle of ambition, industry, and the lives of ordinary people. Samuel Harden Church’s *A Short History of Pittsburgh: 1758-1908* offers a compelling glimpse into one such narrative, a chronicle of a place that rose from frontier outpost to industrial powerhouse. In an age defined by rapid change and global interconnectedness, understanding the forces that shaped a single, pivotal American city provides a valuable lens through which to view broader patterns of growth and transformation. This book is an invitation to trace the development of a uniquely American landscape.
About the author: Samuel Harden Church (1858-1943) was a man of many accomplishments, serving as a lawyer, a judge, a professor of jurisprudence, and a prominent figure in Pittsburgh’s civic life. Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, he moved to Pittsburgh as a young man and quickly became involved in the city’s burgeoning legal and industrial spheres. His long career in law culminated in his appointment as a judge of the Pennsylvania Common Pleas Court. While his legal and academic work was substantial, it is through his historical writing, particularly *A Short History of Pittsburgh*, that he left a lasting mark.
