An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, Volume 1: MDCXC, Based on the 2nd Edition, Books 1 and 2
by Locke, John
Lion's Mark Library edition.
How often do we find ourselves adrift in a sea of opinions, unsure of the foundations upon which our beliefs rest? John Locke’s *An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding* offers a bracing course correction. Published in stages beginning in 1689, this monumental work, now presented in this first volume, represents a profound inquiry into the origins of knowledge, a project strikingly relevant to anyone grappling with the complexities of information and belief in our own age. It asks, simply, where do our ideas come from, and how can we be certain of anything at all?
About the author: John Locke (1632–1704) was a towering figure of the Enlightenment, a philosopher, physician, and political theorist whose ideas profoundly shaped the course of Western thought. Born in Wrington, England, his life was marked by political instability and intellectual ferment. The English Civil War, which erupted during his youth, instilled in him a deep appreciation for reason and a skepticism toward arbitrary authority. Educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, Locke’s early career involved teaching and clerical duties, but his intellectual pursuits soon led him into the orbit of prominent thinkers like Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke. It was through these connections that he began formulating the ideas that would ultimately culminate in *An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding*.
