Anticipations of the reaction of mechanical and scientific progress upon human life and thought
by Wells, H. G. (Herbert George)
Lion's Mark Library edition.
The year is 1902. The world is accelerating. New technologies promise to reshape life as we know it, and a sense of breathless anticipation hangs in the air. Yet, alongside the excitement, a quiet anxiety lingers – what will these changes *mean* for humanity? H. G. Wells’ *Anticipations* offers a rare glimpse into that moment of profound transition, a moment remarkably similar to our own. It’s a book that asks not just *what* will happen, but *how* we will adapt, what values we will preserve, and what dangers we must navigate. To revisit it today is to find a surprisingly relevant conversation about the future, and our place within it.
About the author: Herbert George Wells (1866–1946) was a prolific English writer, whose career spanned science fiction, utopian literature, and social commentary. Born in Bromley, Kent, his early life was marked by financial hardship and a challenging education, experiences that instilled in him a keen awareness of social inequality and a desire for reform. Initially trained as a draper’s apprentice, Wells’s intellectual development was largely self-directed, fueled by a voracious appetite for science and literature. He became a teacher before embarking on a writing career that would establish him as a major literary figure.
