Confessions
by Augustine of Hippo
Penmark House edition.
There is a restlessness that afflicts us all, a sense that something is missing, a longing that resists easy satisfaction. Augustine of Hippo, writing near the dawn of the fifth century, understood this intimately, and in *Confessions* he offers a profound and startlingly modern exploration of that yearning. This is not a work of systematic theology, nor a straightforward narrative of conversion, but something far more personal and compelling: a journey into the depths of a soul wrestling with faith, doubt, and the complexities of human desire. It’s a book that invites us to examine our own lives, our own struggles, and the sources of our deepest longings.
About the author: Augustine of Hippo (c. 354 – 430 AD) was a towering figure of late antiquity, whose influence on Western thought and Christianity remains unparalleled. Born in Thagaste (modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria) to a pagan father and a devout Christian mother, Monica, his early life was marked by a restless pursuit of knowledge and a fascination with Manichaeism, a dualistic religion. His intellectual brilliance led him to Rome and then to Milan, where he initially pursued a career in rhetoric. It was in Milan that he encountered the preaching of Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, which ultimately led to his conversion to Christianity around 386 AD.
