The art of money getting : or, golden rules for making money

by Barnum, P. T. (Phineas Taylor)

Lion's Mark Library edition.

In an age obsessed with instant gratification and complex investment strategies, P.T. Barnum’s *The Art of Money Getting* offers a surprisingly grounded and refreshingly direct guide to building wealth. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme, nor a treatise on high finance. Instead, it’s a pragmatic, almost folksy, exploration of the virtues of diligence, economy, and opportunity – principles that remain remarkably relevant regardless of the era. This little volume serves as a useful corrective to the often-overblown promises of modern self-help, reminding us that the fundamentals of financial success are often simpler than we imagine.

About the author: Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810–1891) was, above all, an American showman. Born in Bethel, Connecticut, he rose to prominence through a series of increasingly elaborate and popular exhibitions, including the American Museum in New York City, which showcased everything from curiosities and natural wonders to trained animals and human oddities. While often remembered for his flamboyant persona and marketing genius – he coined the term “humbug” to describe his methods – Barnum was also a shrewd businessman and an astute observer of human nature. *The Art of Money Getting*, delivered as a series of lectures in 1880, represents a distillation of his own experiences and philosophies regarding wealth accumulation.
